Bushfire Recovery Victoria Storm Impacted Trees Project

Yarra and Dandenong Ranges, The Grampians, Gippsland, Central Highlands

Objectives

Engaged in June 2021, to commence by August 2021 a large scale tree clean up project across Victoria, working for Johns Lyng Group, the head contractor for a major Victorian State Government storm rectification contract.

Challenges

The major challenge with this contract:

Rapid mobilisation time frame in the middle of a pandemic.

  • Scale of the project in terms of number of trees.

  • Geographic spread.

  • Technical and safety challenges dealing with Mountain Ash, the world's second largest tree.

  • Maintaining Enviro Trees service delivery to all existing customers during a time of substantial weather event driven volumes.

  • Substantial accountability for all hours, equipment and work performed on a site by site, daily basis.

Solutions

  • Enviro mobilised, using our network of Tree Partners, ten different companies to cover the designated areas. These included:

    • Total of 60 plus qualified field operators

    • 30 trucks

    • 20 chippers

    • Excavators, bobcats and elevated work platforms.

  • Onboarding of the work crews, qualifications onto the JLG compliance platform:

    • Inductions

    • Implementation of required reporting procedures

    • Daily check-in and toolbox

    • Equipment checks & certified.

    • Emergency procedures

    • Confirmed Covid (minimum first injection).

    • A full time Operations Manager liaised with JLG to:

      • provide insight and knowledge regarding arboriculture and the tree industry.

      • Assisted preparation of supporting documentation for bush fire prevention plans, covid plans, environmental risk and management.

    • Enviro installed two full time site safety supervisors, to audit the crews, coordinate with the residents and liaise with JLG and BRV.

    • First job commenced the 29th of July 2021.

    • Final job was 9th of March 2022.

    • Completed 258 jobs on the project.

    • Worked on over 1,250 trees (removals or prune).

    • 36,445 hours of work completed.

    • Nil Lost Time Injuries.
